World Oldest Satellite

Good day great minds and welcome to my blog, The world oldest and functional satellite is the Lincoln calibration sphere, it’s a huge, aluminum sphere possessing a cross section that has been existing on the Earth orbit since 1965.

It is said to be the oldest satellite without having power, is has a 3 feet 8 inch diameter metal sphere and also provides ground based radars with the aim to calibrate their instruments.

During calibration, one needs to posses a reference data at which the radar output can be juxtaposed. It as well helps in fine running of the radar to make sure it’s output is same as the expected result.

Calibration Spheres are designed to have steady radar cross section (RCS) value, making them an effective waive tool, such as lasers, are available for satellite tracking, it is worthy of note, you can use the same satellite in calibrating radar position data as well.

I’m 1965 the Lincoln Calibration Sphere was launched, several attempts was also made to launch more calibration spheres, which resulted in the failures. The LCS 4 was launched again in 1972 and was revealed to have a life span of seventy five years.

Excluding the Lincoln Calibration spheres, hood calibration satellite with transponders that emit a signal on command are as well used. In determining the satellite location, a ground radar station sends a transmission command and records the measurement afterwards. How
